GOOD 019, The Neighborhoods Issue, focuses on the issues surrounding the places we live and our relationship with them. In March of 2010 I was asked to be guest art director for the this issue, my first as Art Director.

This issue has some of the best visual talent ever represented in a single issue of GOOD, with 70+ artists participating. I got to help choose those artists and I also helped with design and did an illustration or two.

For the art in the magazine, we selected many different visual creators to show us their unique perspective on what a neighborhood is. Valeriya Volkova (Brooklyn, NY), Lorin Brown (Los Angeles, CA), Miss Lotion (Copenhagen) and Public School (Austin, TX) all created covers for GOOD’s first multiple-cover issue. They are all available as prints from Society6.


Out of a desire to have more than just four visual neighborhood viewpoints, we devised the Neighborhood Flags project, where we asked a few talented artists and designers to create flags for their neighborhoods. A few flag makers: Frank Chimero, Always With Honor, Aaron Draplin, Mark Weaver and more.


Some of my favorite my favorites illustrators and artists submitted art for the issue. Chris Johanson, Trevor Burks, Jesse Spears, Jeff Canham, Maxwell Hoyoke-Hirsch, Philippe Nicolas, Leif Parsons and Scott Barry all did some heavy lifting, and Micah Lidberg made the beautiful map you see above.
